Jan 24, Long before Carl was bitten on The Walking Dead TV series, a fan of the comic books perfectly predicted the character's fate -- to a certain. The Walking Dead Gute alte Zeit (German Edition) - Kindle edition by Robert Kirkman, Charlie Book 1 of 30 in The Walking Dead (Reihe in 30 Bänden).

Some of the characterization is just non-existent, like the pretty co-ed who dies who lives with her sister and a much older man in a sexless set-up apparently designed to give him comfort after his wife has left - having women around to keep things neat and friendly is so nice for him, after all.

When she is legitimately pissed that her husband, without consulting her, decided that their seven-year-old son should start carrying a gun, she comes off as shrill and overprotective.

Then the kid shoots a zombie and saves her and she has to go cry to Rick about how wrong she was. Never mind that the next time the kid goes out hunting with his dad, he gets shot.

Why do these women only ever talk about canned food and their husbands? I have no beef with female characters doing questionable things, or being morally ambiguous, or cheating on their husbands, or wanting to have sex with their boyfriends, or being sad that they got dumped, or caring about canned food and laundry.

Why do Lori and Rick neverrrr speak? Why do all male-female interactions last five seconds and end in sex, except for one time, when Andrea brings up a perfectly legitimate issue and is called a cunt and a bitch and ignored?

Why are all the decisions made by dudes, even after said dudes have made a million bad decisions? I know feminists, both male and female, who love these comics.

God knows I love some problematic shit, and I am confident in my and their ability to acknowledge what is shitty and separate it from the plot and not let it twist my view.

Just do the laundry and let me play with my guns! Can I read that instead? View all 31 comments. Jan 16, Donovan rated it it was amazing Shelves: How to review The Walking Dead?

His lines are sharp, his characters unique, his action unmatched. Charlie Adlard is solid, but his character design is lacking by comparison.

Hopefully later volumes are better without this awkward transition. Bold lines and emphatic inks accompany a stark, dramatic story and it works perfectly.

Would it look great with colors like Outcast? But it would be a very different comic, and maybe incomparable.

The writing is fucking incredible. Pacing, dialog, horror, suspense, characterization. I love how much faster this story moves compared to the television show.

In just two volumes they go from the camp, to the farm, to the prison. So the zombies are merely the stage upon which the characters play, where the drama takes place.

Whereas in Outcast the demons are integral to the plot and character development. A short note on the Deluxe Edition The dust jacket-less cover is durable and boldly designed, with an awesome spine.

The paper is thick and high gloss. The binding is glued and very good, although a little tighter than Outcast. View all 12 comments. Oct 31, EisNinE rated it it was amazing Shelves: Even more than Game of Thrones and ASOIAF, the show has transcended the source material by altering the plot and the fates of several major characters, adding entirely new faces like Daryl Dixon who has become a wild card for comic fans and a favorite for many.

But the comic is still powerful storytelling, and remains the soul and center. One thing Kirkman, Adlard, and the writers of the show deserve praise for is the way both storylines have diverged.

There are moments where both stories seem to coalesce, but then break apart to follow separate roads once again Episode 3 of Season 6 is a good example -- what the fuck?!

Issue of the comic had prepared me for a similarly unsettling exit, but it managed to capture the sense of sudden, shocking finality that the comic has excelled at.

No last second, improbable deus ex machine salvation; the seemingly hopeless predicament is truly hopeless. Art by Charles Adlard: This is the format to buy, without question.

The deluxe hardcover is larger, the 8" x 11" oversized edition instead of the standard 7" x 10". Each hardcover book contains two of the softcover volumes; so Book 1 collects Volumes 1 and 2.

Every storyline is about the same length -- 6 comicbook issues. So the Volumes are around pages, and the Books are a bit longer, or so pages; they come with extras -- like the original single-issue covers, and miscellaneous artwork from Charlie Adlard and Tony Moore -- that the softcover Volumes do not.

Pricewise, each oversized, extra-long hardcover Book is about the same price as the two softcover volumes it collects. Image does as excellent job producing each.

That is to say that Mr. Kirkman, with a stunning mastery, reduces his characters and story to blank human slates both dead and alive that express only their most primal instincts and btw, his view of manly instincts vs.

The characters are much more raw, and I identify with them less. I even dislike most of them, including Rick.

I do realize that in an actual situation like a zombie apocalypse, it would be extremely unlikely that one person would remain the voice of reason in every stressful situation.

Everyone would snap once in a while. The lack of a reliable "leader" made each setback almost unbearable.

The Walking Dead debuted in , published by Image Comics , with art by Tony Moore for the first six issues and Cliff Rathburn shading the art after issue five.

Charlie Adlard took over as artist on issue 7, after he was approached by Kirkman. The remainder were done by Adlard.

The first 52 issues of the series began to be reprinted on January 5, , with one issue per week for a year. The series is periodically re-published in trade paperbacks which contain six issues each, hardcover books with twelve issues and occasional bonus material, omnibus editions of twenty-four issues, and compendium editions of forty-eight issues.

The fan-oriented event has a scheduled date of October 13, and will coincide with the release of a Walking Dead 1 15th Anniversary Variant Edition, with cover art by current series artist Charlie Adlard.

The company also noted that additional limited edition collectibles and festivities would be announced at a future date, prior to the October event.

Rick Grimes is the main character, a deputy who is comatose when the zombie apocalypse begins. With his wife Lori and son Carl , he joins with groups other survivors.

He is joined by former best friend Shane , who secretly has a sexual relationship with Lori. The group consists of firm clerk and college graduate Andrea and her sister Amy , a mechanic named Jim, car salesman Dale , shoe salesman Allen and his wife, Donna as well as their children, Ben and Billy.

Lori and Carl form friendships with other survivors such as Carol and Sophia. After leaving the camp, Rick gains a right-hand man and close friendship in Tyreese , who is accompanied by his daughter and her boyfriend.

They soon find a farm run by Hershel Greene. As the group settle at a prison, they become conflicted with a group of surviving prisoners.

Otis meets a katana-wielding survivor named Michonne , who is brought into the group, but struggles to acclimate, facing her own demons.

Michonne, Rick and Glenn are later held in captivity by The Governor , a leader of a town called Woodbury who plan to take over the prison.

Among the residents are Heath and Dr. Denise Cloyd, who quickly become close allies to the core group, and eventually the conflicted Nicholas.

Rick falls in love with Jessie Anderson, an abused wife. Abraham forms a relationship with Holly, a member of the construction crew.

A group of men, known as The Scavengers, tries to conquer Alexandria; the fight attracts a pack of walkers that invades the safe zone, leading to the death of a lot of Alexandrians.

Later, the safe zone starts a trading network with the Hilltop Colony, with help from its scout Paul "Jesus" Monroe.

However, their safety is again threatened by the psychopathic Negan and his group known as The Saviors who reside in a factory. One of the Saviors, Dwight becomes an ally with the communities.

After the war, newcomers such as Magna and Dante are introduced into the series. Another community out at sea is established, as well as safety perimeters across the DC area, which is violated by the presence of the Whisperers, a tribe of people disguised as the dead who have rejected the notion of re-establishing civilization.

The leader, Alpha, antagonizes Rick as her daughter, Lydia, forms a sexual relationship with Carl. The "zombie idea" developed by George Romero does not exist in The Walking Dead universe; hence, of all the myriad terms used to describe the undead by different communities, the word "zombie" has been deliberately avoided.

While it has been used extremely rarely in the comics, it has never been used in the television adaptation. Other names have been used by characters in the series, including biters and stinkers.

The series received critical acclaim, winning the Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series in [13] and prompting Eric Sunde of IGN comics to call it "one of the best monthly comics available".
